Mary Dean McLellan Stuart

Mary M. Stuart, formerly of Burlington, died peacefully on November 13, 2017 in her home at The Residence at Otter Creek, in Middlebury at the age of 93.
She was born in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Portia and Dean McLellan. She was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and Bradford Junior College. She attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School.
On April 21, 1945, she married Homer Stuart. They celebrated 66 years of marriage. She was predeceased by her husband, brother, John McLellan and sister-in-law, Mary McLellan. She is survived by her daughter, Genie Christiansen and her husband, Niel, of Essex; her son Robert and his wife, Mary, of South Burlington and her daughter Katie Barrett and her husband, Roy, of Salmon, ID; three grandchildren, Andrew Christiansen, Molly Goldstein and Ian Stuart; and seven great-grandchildren, Miley Stuart, Boede Christiansen, Kathleen Stuart, Willoughby Goldstein, Ella Christiansen, Ina Stuart and Lila Goldstein.
In 1950, Mary and Homer moved to Burlington, Vermont where she was active in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, PEO, Kiepha Club, Mary Fletcher Hospital Auxiliary and the Madonna Mountain ski racing program. Upon Homer's retirement, they resided six months in Sarasota, Florida and six months in Burlington, Vt.
Mary was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was very social and enjoyed talking with everyone. She had an enthusiastic spirit for life. She enjoyed playing golf and actively played into her late '80's. She also loved to play bridge. She and her husband traveled extensively and she made new friends wherever she traveled.
The family is very grateful to Jeff Abell PA-C at Catamount Primary Care in Middlebury. We would also like to thank Dr. Diana Barnard and the hospice team at Addison Home Health and Hospice - along with the wonderful caregivers at The Residence at Otter Creek.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Middlebury on November 20, 2017 at 1:00 pm.
